When I didn't fine the libsane-hpaio.so.1 file in /usr/lib64/sane I remembered that when I first built hplip 1.6.6 I forgot to use the --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 switches. I went back and re-configured but forgot to "clean" my old configuration so the libs were never installed correctly. A fresh build of hplip 1.6.6 solved my problem and everything works great now.
