Thomas- Try just running:
hp-setup 192.168.1.254 The port numbers (--port=) are numbered 1-3, corresponding to the physical ports on a multiple port JetDirect (of which, I think the 500x is the only one? Not 100% sure...). There is no need to specify port 9100 in HPLIP. Unless you are plugged into the 2nd or 3rd port of a multi-port JetDirect, you do not need to specify --port=.
