Try just running:

hp-setup 192.168.1.254

The port numbers (--port=) are numbered 1-3, corresponding to the 
physical ports on a multiple port JetDirect (of which, I think the 500x 
is the only one? Not 100% sure...). There is no need to specify port 
9100 in HPLIP. Unless you are plugged into the 2nd or 3rd port of a 
multi-port JetDirect, you do not need to specify --port=.

Here's the relevant bit from hp-setup --help:

To specify the port on a multi-port JetDirect: 
-p<port> or --port=<port> (Valid values are 1*, 2, and 3. *default)

Here's the example from hp-setup --help:

Network, Jetdirect port 2: $ hp-setup --port=2 66.35.250.209
