I have an HP PSC 2210, connected by USB, and am trying to get it set up under Gentoo Linux (see http://www.gentoo.org). I have installed hplip-0.9.7-r3 through Portage, and I have managed to set up printing with cups. I have installed sane-backends-1.0.17 through Portage for scanning, but whenever I try to use the scanner, there is a long delay, the scanner itself shows no sign of activity, and the following error eventually appears:
open of device hpaio:/usb/PSC_2200_Series?serial=MY2CHF34TG0G failed: Error
during device I/O
This happens in both scanimage and xsane, as root and as a normal user.
My processor is a Pentium 4.
The kernel release in use is 2.6.17-gentoo-r4.

Please help if you can. I do not know whether I have posted all relevant
information, so please say if I should post something else. The scanner did work
properly on Windows XP, so I do not think it can be a hardware problem.
