No and no, I fear.
elf:~/hplip-1.6.7 # iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
elf:~/hplip-1.6.7 # ps ax | grep hp
2769 ? S 0:00 [khpsbpkt]
9447 ? Ss 0:00 ./hpiod
2475 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep hp
No firewall, and all the other services this machines offers work ok.
Also no previous version of hplip there.
I wonder, though, if the hpssd.py is of more importance than I first
thought. This doesn't start:
elf:~/hplip-1.6.7 # python /usr/local/share/hplip/hpssd.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/local/share/hplip/hpssd.py", line 66, in ?
from base import utils, slp, device
File "/usr/local/share/hplip/base/device.py", line 39, in ?
from prnt import pcl, ldl, cups
File "/usr/local/share/hplip/prnt/cups.py", line 27, in ?
import cupsext
ImportError: No module named cupsext
So it seems cupsext is missing. But:
elf:~/hplip-1.6.7 # locate cupsext
/usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/cupsext.so
Now, I do recall that I ran configure without the (in the installation
instructions mentioned) switch --prefix=/usr.
After I copied cupsext.so to the proper location, restarted hplip and
cups I could add and use the printer.
My bad.
It would be nice to point out the importance of the --prefix switch more
clearly, though.
Anyway, thanks for the help - your pointer wasn't directed at the core
of the problem, but it did help me.
