I will check whether they are visible after scanning (given the
scanner that I have, which is not a great one). As you might surmise
from this, the lines are very narrow and faint. I didn't notice them
the first time I looked at one of these prints, but in good light they
are very obvious once you are aware of them. You certainly don't end
up with a perfect print this way.

Some additional information:

The lines are always in the "x-axis" of the original, so end up running
in the short or long length of the photo paper depending upon whether I
have selected portrait or landscape, respectively.

This problem does *not* occur if the files are small enough. I am not yet
sure what size is small enough, but it does not happen with a 400x600 pixel
original or with another that was just over 600x900. The originals that I
have been having problems with are 2016x3040, though some that I shrunk a
bit are also defective. (Somewhat expensive to do a "search" shrinking and
printing lots of defective prints, since they are not that cheap.)

This leads me to wonder whether this represents a bug/error in the KDE
routines that are scaling the images. Seems the images would be scaled
prior to being passed to the printer driver, so don't see how different
size photos would cause the driver to sometimes put in lines and sometimes
not. Seems more likely that the routines that are scaling the jpegs are
doing something odd. What do people who know more about the hp drivers
think of that reasoning? Would be wonderful if I could figure out how
to dump the KDE-scaled photo to a file to view, but I have not been able
to see how that might be done.

Seems like a good idea to post to the kde-print list and see what they think.
