Yes, 'ppdev' is a required module. Please run this command:
# modprobe ppdev
as root/superuser.

I've got an ASUS A7V600 motherboard and I never changed the default
configuration for the parallel port, and it always worked under Linux.
There are apparently no configuration parameters for the LPT, except for
the deactivating option.
Feel free to ask me all the specific technical stuff you need.
