Problem is solved, I reinstalled the machine and at that time the install
succeeded - working great now!
By the way I use Mandriva Free 2007.0, it's in the subject line ;-)

make needs to be ran as user.
make install is ran as root.
Did you get any errors during the ./configure --prefix step?
What distro are you using?
