Did you download the hplip 1.6.12 tar ball? If so remove the hplip currently installed and install 1.6.12.
Instructions for debian here: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/manual/distros/debian.html Although it's very odd that the printer would say that there is a paper jam. I've tested the C3100 series with 1.6.12 and it prints correctly.. Hope this helps.
