The problem is that I don't think the Windows driver for the printer from HP
works for printing over a network. I just installs a lot of image editing
software.

In fact, the only way to install the Windows driver is by manually
connecting the printer to it; otherwise, the driver installation will not
continue. Part way through the installation, it asks me to connect the
printer to the computer, but it doesn't give me the option of specifying
that the printer is on the network.

See if you can change the margin settings on the Windows side.
You would be better served to install the PSC 1210 driver from HP on your
Windows box and share the
printer on your linux box via Samba. In this scenario, cups on linux side
will just forward the data it receives
from the Windows box unmodified and you can use the full features of the
printer from your Windows print driver.

Hello,

I have set this printer up using CUPS and printing works perfectly from
the local GNU/Linux machine. I also set up the network printing; Windows XP
computers print to it using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) with the
Generic MS Publisher Imagesetter driver (a Postscript driver). The problem
is that when printing to the printer through Windows XP, the top margin on
each page is very large. Even if printing a text file with no margins, the
first line of text shows up almost an inch below the top of the Letter-sized
(US Letter) page. Is there any way to fix this?

Thank you,
Malcolm
