It turns out that all I had to do was restart CUPS by running:
/etc/init.d/cupsys restart
Then the margin error stopped occurring and I can continue to use IPP to
share the printer.

The problem is that I don't think the Windows driver for the printer from
HP works for printing over a network. I just installs a lot of image editing
software.

In fact, the only way to install the Windows driver is by manually
connecting the printer to it; otherwise, the driver installation will not
continue. Part way through the installation, it asks me to connect the
printer to the computer, but it doesn't give me the option of specifying
that the printer is on the network.
