Good Day Alan

You should not have to down grade HPLIP to 1.6.6a. I'll fire up SUSE
10.0 and see if I can reproduce this. We use 10.0 default installs in
the lab and it should work.

Also, how did you install 2.7.7? Through the .run or .tar file?
