I would think that John is referring to the "standard" install location. When the hplip installation is done you "usually" get this from hpcheck cut... hp-check: info: :---------------------- hp-check: info: :| HPLIP INSTALLATION | hp-check: info: :---------------------- hp-check: info: : hp-check: info: : hp-check: info: :Currently installed HPLIP version... hp-check: info: :HPLIP 2.7.6 currently installed in '/usr/share/hplip'. /cut.... imho there is nothing to say against installing hplip elsewhere e.g. to /opt/hplip BUT if "strange" things happen, like we get here, then it might be worth to at least try the "regular" way of installation, just to be on the safe side.
