Thanks to John and co-workers at HP, I have finally managed to properly detect and operate my scanner. Even hp-toolbox does not complain and shows the status of the cartridges, etc. When I run hp-sendfax *as a normal user* and add a file, the program just waits (for something) indefinitely and the file is not being added. However, when I run hp-sendfax as root, the same file is added in a few hundred of milliseconds and all is well.
