Here is the hp-check log. Before you waste any time looking at it, let me fill you in (as best I can) on what I have done since posting my original problem. I am totally confused at this point and hope that my problem is a simple dumb mistake on my part.
I decided to start over. Deleted my HP 6100 series printer and re-installed HPLIP 2.7.7 using the auto-installer. After it finished, i re-installed the printer using "sudo hp-setup". I successfully installed the printer and a fax - no scanner was ever referenced in the setup procedure. After this new install, I brought up the HP Device Manager. The result was the same as I described in my original post, but, the delay before the device manager appeared was much shorter. The printer works fine. I attempted to scan (from the device manager screen) the printer test page. I selected "acquire preview" and got the expected preview of the printer test page. However, when I selected "Scan" to get the actual scan of the page, I was presented with a blank page. Nothing that I tried would get me to the scanned image. I finally dropped all of the scan windows and checked my home directory. I had several files - an xsane-conversion-hpaio:usb-Photosmart..... file and 3 files named xsane-preview-levelX-hpaio:usb-Photosmart...... files where X was equal to 0,1,and 2. I have no idea where to go from here. I also noted that when I went to system administration (System->Administration->Printing) all printers on all systems were displayed even though two of the three systems were down - not booted. I hope that all of this nonsense has not confused the issue too badly. At this point, I will do virtually anything to get you the information that you need to help me out.
