I've just discovered that I have also lost the ability to scan.  I normally 
acquire from the GIMP, but when this failed to see the device I tried it from 
hplip.  The error message was

Failed to open device `hpaio:net/Photosmart_C7100_series?ip=192.168.0.3; 
Invalid argument
