Hi, I figured as we were trying to get a handle on the status of the project and encouraging developers to come forward I thought I would start with a brief introduction to try and get things rolling.
I only work on open source projects, it's my full-time job and I volunteer a lot time participating in a number of projects that interest me. My day job is with Zenplex (http://www.zenplex.org) where I work on Tambora (http://tambora.zenplex.org) which is an open source b2b application for the printing and publishing industry. Pretty much all my volunteer time is taken up with various Jakarta projects. I started out working on Turbine (http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine) which is a webapp framework and I currently am taking care of that project. Working on Turbine lead me into writing the Velocity template engine (http://jakarta.apache.org/velocity) because of licensing problems with WebMacro. After that I went back to splitting out the services code and persistence layer code from Turbine and am working on Turbine 3.0. Amongst other various things at Jakarta I watch over Jetspeed, Turbine and anything else Turbine related. I help out admin'ing CVS and getting new users up and running, I'm a member of the Jakarta PMC and am a member of Apache, coordinated the effort of moving BCEL to Jakarta, and Hannes Wallnoefer's XMLRPC package to xml.apache.org. So I'm very committed to open source, I try to help projects that I'm interested by getting communication going between the right people and so far things have not been perfect by any stretch of the imagination but most things are working out. In the case of hsqldb I definitely have an intereste because I use it in a lot of projects and I want to see it succeed and I think I can definitely help. I don't intend in any way to alienate of the existing developers, myself and kevin may have prematuring starting using apache style conversations to deal with issues (+1'ing various items) but I would like to have some consensus if this is the direction we are taking. I believe that everyone is grateful that the project didn't disappear when Thomas Mueller could no longer work on the project, but IMO this project hasn't had much movement in the face of an obvious developer interest. I think this project needs to be opened up to developers if this project is actually going to succeed. So far I think the reactions to any of ideas floating around have been positive so I think I would like to write up a quick proposal with a small vote on certain issues, see what the results are and than discuss the various options (though I see that a lot of people have already answered) I hope that other developers feel free to introduce themselves so we can figure out what people are interested in and organize the effort. Thanks, -- jvz.
