HSQLDB has enjoyed huge success in recent years due to the efforts of all developers to improve the engine in all areas, especially reliability, speed and features.
This work has taken a significant amount of my time, which I have funded via other, unrelated sources. As the development work on HSQLDB is not going to stop, and the use of the engine will be more widespread in business and commercial contexts, I have decided to divide my efforts on database engine development into two areas. 1.. Development of HSQLDB will continue as before. I have outlined the immediate plans up to version 1.8.0 in another post today. Versions after 1.8.0 will follow with the new grammar based parser and other enhancements. 2.. Free support for HSQLDB will continue to be provided via our forums and mailing lists. 3.. I have released a separate SQL engine, featuring a new core that I have developed over the last several months. This engine, named HyperXtremeSQL, is fully compatible with HSQLDB at application level but is much faster in most common usage scenarios. HyperXtremeSQL is a commercial, closed source product aimed at all professional users of HSQLDB. See http://www.hxsql.com 4.. I will provide paid professional support both for HSQLDB and HyperXtremeSQL. 5.. HyperXtremeSQL will remain compatible with HSQLDB in the foreseeable future. A large amount of code outside the engine core is shared between the two products and improvements to this code will be equally reflected in both. 6.. Sale of licenses for HSQLDB and support for HyperXtremeSQL will help the continued development and support of both products. I invite all professional and commercial users of HSQLDB to purchase some professional support, which will in turn support HSQLDB. If the speed and capacity improvements provided by HyperXtremeSQL (http://www.hxsql.com) are of interest, then this is a safe choice, as your applications will work with both engines without modifications.
