Another peice of information I left out that may be useful in helping solve
this problem -- I ran htsearch from a command line and it did return results
(in the form of html links).
Thanks again.

Subject: [htdig] Problem with htsearch
There seems to be a problem with a site I'm indexing. This install of htdig
is fresh, and worked one day ago. In process of moving servers and
updating other non-related (nothing in /etc/htdig or /var/lib/htdig was
touched) scripts or files something was altered.
The htsearch program is not returning descriptions of results, though there
are '1,2,3 [next]' links at the bottom of the page to indicate that results
were indeed found. No errors appear in httpd/error_log to indicate
something wrong happened.
I tried deleting all db files and re-running 'htdig -iv' and 'htmerge -v'.
This did not correct the problem.
current file sizes:
/var/lib/htdig/db/db.docdb 59 kb
/var/lib/htdig/db/db.wordlist 1141 kb
/var/lib/htdig/db/db.docs.index 210 kb
/var/lib/htdig/db/db.words.db 4376 kb
Thanks for your assistance.
