I suspect, based on your description above, that you set it
incorrectly. max_doc_size is a config attribute that you set at run
time, not a makefile variable that you set at compile time. It goes
in your htdig.conf file, or similar config file, and not in CONFIG or
Makefile.config, and the format is below (note the name must be lower
case as well!):
max_doc_size: 5116469
