oooookkkkkk ..... So you heavily recommend to use the bsd shutdown 
when a dig is in progress. Can you give me (possibly off the list) a 
list of actions to put this into light so I can forward it to Apple ?

What I meant is that the update was done halfway with the regular 
databases and halfway with .work databases. Apparently this is not 
the problem. Shutting down too fast, like you exposed above may be 
the culprit.
