Given that htmerge is finding words but no documents, it's a
pretty safe bet that it's htdig that crashed and dumped core.
Try running htdig on its own, e.g. "htdig -ivvv", and have a look at
the debugging output that htdig puts out just before it dies. Also,
try to get a stack backtrace from the debugger (see last paragraph of
http://www.htdig.org/FAQ.html#q5.14).
