So when you say "current version of g++," I'm assuming you mean something like gcc 3.0.x. At this point, I don't know of anyone who has successfully compiled ht://Dig on any platform with gcc 3.0.x--largely because none of the developers has had a working gcc3 setup until a few days ago. In any case, the issue here is that the configure script couldn't figure out what the compiler was doing. The script tests for this particular problem (because it seems every platform has a different type for this call) and something didn't work quite right.
