I'm not sure if you're asking as a user of the nyam.org site, or as
a maintainer of it. There's no easy way of restricting searches to
text strings containing punctuation in this way. If you're a maintainer
of the site, there are a few things that you could try to get the more
significant results ranked higher. If you're just a user, you may
want to pass this on to someone who maintains the nyam.org site.
(We don't, we just work on the search engine software, which is used
by thousands of sites.)
First of all, you can drop the maximum_word_length attribute from the
default of 3 down to 2, and reindex, so short words like state codes
get indexed. The fact that they're in the document titles should help,
as titles score higher than words in the document body. You can tweak
this further by increasing title_factor, or decreasing the other *_factor
attributes. Finally, you could add the "(" and ")" characters to
extra_word_characters so they're treated as part of the word like letters,
but somehow I don't think that's what you want to do in general, because
then a search for "cancer" will miss this word at the start or end of
a parenthetical note.
