I can think of a couple possibilities: database corruption or htdig is just
not seeing the tags for whatever reason.  Try running htdig -ivvvv with
the start_url set to just one of these HTML files, and see what htdig's
parser puts out in the debugging output.  If it's not seeing the title,
and not reporting correctly what the title is, then have a closer look
at the actual HTML code to see if you can see why.  Are there improperly
formatted HTML comments above the <title> and </title> tags?  Is there
inline JavaScript code that's not enclosed in HTML comments?  If you need
more eyes, just post a snippet of HTML or the URL of one of these files
so others can have a look.

On the other hand, if htdig is reporting the title correctly, try rebuilding
your index from scratch and see if that solves the problem with htsearch.
