I run htdig 3.1.5 on a couple of servers (SuSE Linux). A new installation on a fresh server with custom templates does not show search results. I use the same templates for the attributes search_templates_wrapper and template_map. On both servers the wrapper is evaluated and shows the number of matches etc. On one of the servers, though, the template_map is not evaluated - obviously it does not even get read by htsearch. htsearch does not produce any output for the $HTSEARCH_RESULTS variable.
