Before anyone spends too much time reinventing the wheel on this, I suggest

Jamie Anstice has already done some preliminary work on this, and it
sounds like a reasonably place to start.  I think the word indexing part
of it needs more work, but a lot of what's needed is there.  Unfortunately,
we never did get patches from Jamie for this, but maybe a bit more coaxing
would help.
