RTFM, right?

I have an Intranet that has built in to every page a security architecture written in PHP that requires authentication to view content. After the initial auth request, pages reference the HTTP_AUTH_USER and HTTP_AUTH_PW variables to do a LDAP lookup to ensure that the user is allowed to view the content.--
Of course, it didn't dawn on me that my search engine isn't going to get very far if it can't authenticate against my security infrastructure. That is, until I installed it and index a grand total of two words.
So, the question is, can htdig supply a username and password to an HTTP_AUTH request to gain entry to a password-protected site for indexing? Any help would be appreciated.
If this is answered in the documentation somewhere, I apologize for the question. If it is, I haven't been able to find it.
Thanks again.
