That's very strange.  The vertical bar doesn't appear to be a valid
separator for the "keywords" input parameter.  If you're using "words" and
not "keywords", as would be expected for the main search query, then the
vertical bar should act as a separator (as would any punctuation character
that's NOT listed in valid_punctuation), but I don't understand why the
"+" signs aren't working as separators for you.  Just how is your PHP
script building up the query string and passing it to htsearch?  Any "+"
sign within the value of an input parameter in the query string should
be taken as a space, and the spaces should definitely not be getting
stripped out without separating the search words.

Can you reproduce this problem without using PHP?  Can you show the
relevant parts of your PHP script and how they build the query string
for htsearch?
