OK, first off it's a good idea to keep the entire list CC'ed. I read 
filtered mail (including the listserver) first and the rest last.

You say "the one of the directories," but since you say that it works 
fine from the command-line, I can tell it's a permission problem. Not 
only does the directory itself have to have proper permissions, but the 
directories leading up to it must have the 'x' permission set for 
"descend."

e.g. /usr/local/share/htdig/common ...
  /usr   &    /usr/local    &    /usr/local/share ...
