Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't
seem to make a difference. Just so I understand...
if you set the config value to htsearch, my expectation
is that it will no longer read the default config file, right?
It's not like it's supposed to *always* read the default
config and just pick up changes out of the alternate one,
is it? In any case that's not happening either as far as I can
tell. Both my databases are being searched.

Have you tried renaming the config file to something that has only alpha
characters? e.g. htdignewweb.conf Even if it's not what you want you could
rule out the hyphen as a potential problem.
I don't know about dashes specifically, but I do know that htdig doesn't
like extra .s in the file name.
