As a fellow newbie who is working with the version of htdig provided by Verio (which hides some files in places that can't be accessed), I had a similar problem. After uncommenting the same lines in the configuration file, I was getting long results that looked like my "long.html" file, but short results that looked like my "long.html" file, not "short.html". I finally fixed the problem when I caught something in the search form. The "search.html" installed by Verio contains this:
Format: <select name="format"> <option value="builtin-long">Long <option value="builtin-short">Short </select> If you haven't already, you want to change this to: Format: <select name="format"> <option value="long">Long <option value="short">Short </select> Then htdig will look for the "long.html" and "short.html" file in your "common" directory, as defined in the configuration file. Now, Perry, since you and I are users of htdig via Verio, I'm irritated by the extremely uninformative way of initiating the indexing process, with that one button on the "Web site add-on" Web page buried in the administrators part of the site. In fact, if I invoke indexing and leave this page up, I end up getting an error message back after a few minutes and somehow aborting the indexing process--but nothing more than a single error message, no logs, etc. Have you figured out any more effective way of controlling/monitoring the indexing process? And other people on this list serve, do you have any suggestions? Alan > I am brand new to htdig and don't even know if I am sending this > e-mail to the right place.
