Answering my own question here - for anyone else who's having trouble with Solaris, GCC and htDig. I finally, in desperation, uninstalled GCC 3.2.2 and installed GCC 2.95.3. Huzzah, everything worked with no extra flags set or paths set, straight out of the box. Compiles with no warnings, Indexes ok and search runs. Phew, now I can get on with my life again!
