Could that message have been "External parser: Fork error."? In which case your Unix system is running out of processes and, of course, will be unable to pipe to a non-existant process. You will have to investigate what is happening, and whether it has anything to do with htdig. Why would you want to apply a 3.1.5 patch to version 3.1.6 What are you trying to do?
