My results from your suggested are listed below. 


> uname -a



> g++ -v


Here is what I see: 

bash-2.05a$ g++ -v
Reading specs from
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/specs
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-113)


> Could you please write down this simple program
> called sample.c made up of 
> just one line?
> #include <sys/socket.h>
> And type:
> gcc -c sample.c


This is what I see: 

bash-2.05a$ gcc -c sample.c   
bash: /usr/bin/gcc: Permission denied


I am on a shared hosting environment, my host I think
uses Red Hat Linux (as one of the commands above
confirms). And on the same setup, for another domain,
I have HTDIG 3.2 (or whatever the latest stable one
is) running! I compiled it and all that..
