This characteristic I encountered running ht-Dig under Solaris. It has to do with the definition of search_algorithm in the htdig.conf. The definition that was included by default when I installed ht-Dig 3.2.0b5 was search_algorithm: exact:1 synonyms:0.5 endings:0.1 If you add "substring" and some weighting factor or offer an alternative search_algorithm which includes "substring", then it will find strings which are parts of words. Otherwise it finds only whole words.
