but google.com isn't the index - it's the search page - not much there for
htdig to index.
ok.. what does an "index" page look like. For example, the first link that
is returned on the search string "april fool" on google is:
www.2meta.com/april-fools/
can I put this on my start_url and have htdig create an index of all pages
served up by www.2meta.com - i.e, would this be an index page?
Well, yes, but there's only about 20 outgoing links from that page. (and an unknown qauntity of links from each linked page)
You shouldn't really be trying to index the internet with htdig - it's a huge task and will take days.
what do you really want to use ht:dig for?
ht:dig follows links from your start_url and indexes each page for later searching by htsearch.
depending on where you start and where those pages link to you could get a tiny sample or a very very large one.
what about rundig -vv - should be less verbose, but maybe more meaningful
information.
OK.
So did you run htmerge?
like the next message said - i thought the steps were: ./configure make make install rundig htsearch -c htdig.conf
yes, but the vvv output from rundig doesn't show a result from htmerge.
can you do htmerge -vvs after you've done rundig?
what about rundig -ivv ?
what does that say?
while we are at it, I assume that the output of htsearch is what I see on the screen after it runs.
in a command line sense, yes, but normally you would use a web page to call htsearch so that a search term could be entered and searched for.
