Hello Jim, Graham, Thanks you for your help. My server was set up correctly. I have discovered that the Fedora binary rpm package is deficient in a whole lot of necessary files and the locations where the various parts of htdig are installed do not match where they should be installed according to the htdig web site. Once I sorted all that out and located all the missing files (some from a tarball, others from the web) and installed them htdig now works just fine. Thanks to all who gave me suggestions and clues.
