Yes, yes, yes! It's a great combination.
For an excellent example (with PHP source) have a look at the PHP site
(www.php.net), and go to the search page. Then click on the "source"
button in the upper left to see how it's done.
You may also want to sign up to the PHP mailing list - there are a few
others with htdig/PHP experience.
