  • Fruit flies at Italian Carnaval

(CNN) -- Wear a helmet if you visit Ivrea in northern Italy at Carnaval time. When folks there celebrate, they roll out wine, bands -- and oranges, suitable for throwing.

Hurling oranges is a tradition in Ivrea that dates to the Middle Ages, when villagers took aim at an unpopular feudal lord and chased him off with a citrus barrage. It remains a treasured, if treacherous, part of the town's past.

Town wants 'Don't feed the monkeys' signs

TOKYO -- There's a new ordinance before the town assembly of Nikko -- "Don't feed the monkeys."

The tourist town counts a 318-foot waterfall, a shrine that is the burial place of a 16th century shogun and troops of wild monkeys as attractions. Problem is the monkeys, while scavenging for food, have stolen bags and bitten people. The government blames it on the tourist's feeding habits.

Government awards scholarships to wrong students

The U.S. Education Department mistakenly told 39 college students that they had won a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship, ranging in value from $25,000 to $100,000.

After a bit of research, the goverment discovered that the 39 students were actually alternates for the award. Now both the original 138 winners and the 39 alternates will receive the prize.

    Nazi theme bar provokes protests

SEOUL, South Korea -- In what's being called another sign indicating how little some Asians know about Nazi attrocities, Jae3JaeGuk bar, or The Third Reich, has a theme centered around the Nazi party.

Nazi flags and propaganda posters hang on the walls and the wait staff wear mock Nazi uniforms. The scene has provoked angry protests from Israeli officials and Jewish groups.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK: putty b-day
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- It's the Golden Anniversary of an icon -- Silly Putty. The egg-shaped product has been stretched and rolled by millions, blasted off on a trip to the moon and once played a role in a criminal case.
