Wanted: Mosquito counters
YORKTOWN, Virginia -- Looking for something to do? The York County Mosquito Control is recruiting volunteers to help count the local mosquito population.
Light traps and good old human bait will be used to attract the blood suckers. About the volunteers, a mosquito control biologist said, "We're not asking them to get bit. Just count as the mosquitoes come toward you."

Thai transvestite film spikes at box office
BANGKOK, Thailand -- A film based on the true story of a transvestite volleyball team has become a lucrative hit in Thailand since opening last week. But the director says he had more than money in mind when making "Satree Lek," or Iron Woman.
Sporting breasts, wigs, makeup and high heels, the team from the northern Thai town of Lampang sprang from obscurity, beating other teams to win the 1996 men's national volleyball championship. The players were a hit, drawing huge crowds wherever they played.

Anti-crime weapon toss in river criticized
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- It sounded like a good idea. On Sunday, an anti-crime group organized a campaign which had at least 1,000 Soweto schoolchildren toss their guns, knives and spears into a river.
Problem is, others then waded in to retrieve the weapons. By the time police divers arrived on the scene they only recovered six knives, two axes and two spears.

Finnish dating show pairs woman with ex-con
HELSINKI, Finland -- If you think Darva Conger got a dud on "Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire," consider the case of the Finnish woman who also went on TV looking for love.
The woman recently picked her Mr. Right, sight unseen, over two other contestants. She got paired with a man who had been imprisoned for five years for a 1983 bank robbery that left a police officer dead, the newspaper reports. The news surfaced before they were to set sail on a romantic voyage.

Holy Toledo! Klinger turns Packo's into hotdog chain
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Max Klinger -- the gown-wearing "M*A*S*H" character always bucking for a Section 8 discharge -- has turned into what is probably the best pitchman Packo's Hot Dog emporium in Toledo.
Jamie Farr, the Toledo native who played Klinger, mentioned his cravings for Packo's Hungarian dogs on just six episodes. But the power of suggestion -- even after 17 years -- has been enough to create a national wiener wonder.

Tempest in a C-cup at Cannes
PARIS -- A bunch of brazen brassiere makers: That's what some organizers of the Cannes Film Festival think of Victoria's Secret, which plans to stage a lingerie show during the 11-day cinema fest.
But festival organizers aren't welcoming the show, regardless that it's an AIDS benefit. Companies that have nothing to do with film are encroaching on their territory, they say.

Sun finally rises for first time this year on Norwegian island
OSLO, Norway -- They certainly weren't the first place on earth to see the sunrise in the new millennium -- but they're likely one of the last.
Townspeople in Longyearbyen, Norway's northernmost village, gathered in the streets on Wednesday to enjoy about 10 minutes of sunshine. It was the first time they had seen the sun since mid-October.
