  • Overweight Philippine police ordered to climb Mount Pinatubo

MANILA, Philippines -- As part of a physical fitness campaign, police in the northern Philippines who have waists over 34 inches have been ordered to climb Mount Pinatubo volcano once a month.

The police chief says the 2 1/2-hour climb is not going to be easy. "This is not going to be a picnic," he said. "We will bring food but not sumptuous meals, because it will just defeat the purpose."

University tries to end sit-in with music from boy band

TORONTO -- University of Toronto campus police have gotten creative in their means of breaking up a sit-in being staged by students protesting the sale of clothing made in Third World sweatshops.

In addition to cutting off the phone lines, officers blare pop music hoping to make the students uncomfortable. "This is probably the first time the Backstreet Boys have been deliberately used as a form of sleep deprivation torture," said one protester.

Beauty is in the ears of the beholder

EDMONTON, Alberta -- A blind judge in a local beauty contest said he based his decisions on the contestants' true beauty. By listening to the tone and emphasis on words, he said he was able to sense their personalities.

The man said organizers told him they were trying to get away from the beauty component of the contest and focus more on intelligence and the person as a whole.
