U.S. diplomat receives pie in the face
THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- The top U.S. diplomat at a U.N. climate conference was hit in the face with a pie on Wednesday, as activists and delegates alike expressed frustration over unproductive talks meant to curb fossil fuel emissions.
A woman thrust a custard pie in the face of Frank Loy, under secretary for global affairs at the State Department, as a fellow environmental campaigner angrily declared that the United States was doing nothing meaningful to fight global warming.

Bread squeezer avoids jail time
DOYLESTOWN, Pennsylvania -- A man convicted of damaging baked goods has been sentenced to probation, a $1,000 fine and time with his psychiatrist.
Samuel Feldman was caught squeezing bread and poking holes in cookie wrappers at supermarkets. He says he had not meant to hurt them.

'Faux Queens' compete in drag
SAN FRANCISCO, California -- For those ladies jealous of all the glamour and glitz enjoyed by drag queens, there's always the annual "Faux Queen Contest" in San Francisco.
In this contest, real women put on big hair, long nails and outlandish costumes to compete for the top prize. This year's winner was Wendi Plains, who donned a cowgirl outfit with silver eyelashes, lots of glitter and stars hanging from her cowgirl hat. She lip-synced the tune "U.S. of A."

Magician to spend time in ice
NEW YORK -- Spending a week underground in a coffin apparently wasn't enough of a thrill for magician David Blaine. For his next trick, Blaine announced Monday he plans to encase himself in a block of ice for 58 hours.

Mexico's 'SuperBarrio' offers to rescue U.S. elections
MEXICO CITY, Mexico -- A social activist in Mexico named "SuperBarrio" has offered to come to the rescue in deciding the U.S. presidential race between candidates Al Gore and George W. Bush.
In exchange for his help, he requests the U.S. embassy to give thousands of Mexicans visas to go to the United States.

NEW YORK CITY (CNN) -- Ho! Ho! Ho!
After demonstrating they could bellow these words with a level of holiday cheer expected from Santa Claus, 40 students prepared on Tuesday to leave the Sidewalk Santa Training School for Manhattan's streets.
The students -- dressed in traditional Santa suits of black boots, red velvet pants, and red velvet coats stuffed with padding -- also had to recite the eight reindeer names.
