Why not gateway the list into news? Then you can use Google (and people like
me can use a preferred news reader to handle conversations).

Yes, I remember that.  One way of solving it would be to use a scope
resolver (loop1.var, loop1.loop2.var).  There won't be a problem with
HTML designers, because they use stuff like this for javascript all the
time (although many of them just let dreamweaver do the javascript).

How are the archives stored?  Maybe a web interface with a search engine
would help.  I use a search engine called namazu (http://www.namazu.org/)
that does not require a database.  It does have special features for
searching through mail folders/archives.  I believe it can be used in
this case if the archives are stored as separate files on disk.
