Anyways, legal stuff aside there is absolutely nothing that prevents us
(or any prospective contributor) from implementing an AuthScheme based
on JCIFS, releasing it under LGPL on any public hosting site, and then
re-licensing it under ASLv2 and contributing the code for inclusion into
HttpComponents / Commons HttpClient when all legal issues are dealt
with.

So, volunteers are still welcome

Yes, this is the key.  It can be done, just not with ASF resources for
the moment.
