By "opening up" I mean creating a gap in the ring, so that it's no longer a ring, which will mean that other images will no longer be fully contained inside the ring, since there will no longer be a ring. I wonder if this trick works. If you create the gap at an area that is nicely covered by other images and the trick does work, you should now get a nice panorama. Note that I haven't tried this, it's purely theoretical, but it might just work.
