i have made some 'planet' panos with a non fish-eye lens, but it was a
_lot_ of work and struggle, not to mention processing time. i used a
24mm rectilinear lens and needed to take 186 (!) photos to get a fully
spherical view in hdr (3 x 61). the number of photos could be
minimized a bit, maybe by 36 (3 x 12) to get the total to 150 (3 x 50)
or so.

i used that experience to convince myself to spend some money on a
full-frame fisheye. i got a 15mm canon fisheye, it can do an hdr
fully spherical pano in 27 (3 x 9) photos in a couple hours (setup,
take photos, copy to computer, develop, stitch and blend). the
resolution is a bit lower than using the 24mm lens, but unless you are
printing them on the side of a building or require extremely high
resolution/detail, there is no need for higher resolution.
