The problem definitively disappeared when I changed the path name ..
When I copied the command that failed from the error window and pasted
it to a console , it worked there ..

I'm suprised you see this on Linux, this is a known problem with some
(not all) Windows codepages.
Testing with the Hugin trunk and autopano-sift-C-2.5.1, I don't see
any problem on Linux, I can match photos with filenames like this:
/home/bruno/photos/test-BrÜno/BrÜno-1.jpg
