sorry for the confusion. I don't think there is much disagreement here, just confusion because I did not express my thoughts well. For developers it is the SHA1 ID that counts. This is what we should display to the users so that they can report it. For packaging it is the rev-nr - because packaging requires that newer versions have higher version number (else the package manager software complains about replacing the software with an older version). Since the SHA1 ID is not sequential (and this can not assign a higher number to a newer version), it should not be used for the package name. The revision number can be used for the package name.
