There used to be a product from SUN, called Sun Grid Engine (SGE) that was made to distribute jobs over multiple computers for processing. It was free a couple years ago, I haven't looked lately, now that Oracle owns them. It might be worth looking into. As I recall, it would run on Windows, Linux, or Solaris systems, but they all had to be the same OS in the grid.

Yes, the Makefile stitching system used by Hugin is very suited to distribution over multiple machines.
