But the thought occurred to me that maybe instead of control points,
what we really need are control "dowels" - sort of like forensic
police dowels used to plot the trajectory of a bullet**. I would
think it would allow connecting different exposure levels of the pano
together easily, as well as through each stack? Maybe a little
ambitious? I don't know of any other software using that type of
system, so it might be a good opportunity at breaking new ground for
some aspiring student.
The problem with hand held bracketing is not only a different
orientation of the camera but also parallax (due to lateral movement)
and different magnification (due to back and forth movement) for near
objects. Both are not correctable for a perfect alignment, no matter
what alignment technique you use - not even with image morphing what
your dowel technique implies (morph-to-fit was already implemented in
the original panorama tools 10 years ago)
Currently recent align_image_stack with all parameters allowed for
optimization (including x, y and z) is one of the best ways to align
handheld bracketed shots.
